OF WEST DEDHAM MASSACHUSETTS THE TRANSCRIPT PRESS. INCORPORATED DEDHAM, MASS. 1823788 FOREWORD T HE coat-of-arms cut is the donation of Mrs. Frank C. Smith of Worcester. The printing of the pamphlet is the donation of Charles M. Cox of Melrose. The work of research and compilation was done by Edward Jones Cox of 64 Brooks Ave., Newtonville, .(although the names and dates in the 6th, 7th and 8th generations were obtained from the family record, so long faithfully kept by Mrs. Olive A. Perry). He de- sires to receive additions and corrections., and will send to all who request it, a directory of addresses of all living cousins, hoping that pleasant correspondence and local reunions will result. Hearty thanks are extended to all who assisted in furnishing information. Extra copies on request. The original intention was to furnish copies free, but so many have said they would feel more comfortable to pay something for it, that any amount you prefer to send will not be refused. E. J. C. s The coat-of-arms is that of William Colburn, a pur- suivant of The Herald's College under Queen Mary, and a (York) herald under Queen Elizabeth, who died in 1567. CREST A stag's head couped (cut off even)^, proper (in the natural color), gorged (encircled round the throat) with a ducal coronet, and pendant thereform a bugle sable stringed gules. Constans fidei. faith). MOTTO (Faithful to trust) or (Constant to DESCENDANTS OF ISAAC COLBURN, JR. Tin: (o^B^R^^ fasiily of wkst dfi)ii\i»i, (wkstwood), mass. Some of the Colbiirns derive the name from "cold", and "burn", mean- ing "cold brook." Others even from "coal" and "burn". It is found in many spellini^s, and is sometimes shortened into "Coburn". But the late Rov. George fl. Gordon of SomcrvilJe, an expert gi'nealogirt whose large amount of material for an (unpiiblisiied) genealogy of the Colburn Family is in the possession of the New England Historic-Genealogical So- ciety ol Boston, told the writer that the name was of Vikii\g oi-igin, the syllable "Col" meaning in tlie Norse mythology one of tlie miiijlr gods, and "burn" meaning "a soldier," hence "Colburn" means a soldier of the god "Col". Tliis same syllable is in Cologne, a city founded by the Norsejiien, and Columbus, whose family, though resident in Italy, were; of Norse descent, and, according to him, all refer tfx this minor god. He said he got tills from books in Latin which are in the library of Harvard College. The n^.ost noted in England of this name is John Colburne, who was born in 1770. He served Avith distinction under Wellington in the Peninsular Campaign in Spain, as Colonel of the 52nd (Oxfordshire) regiment, in the battles of Corunna, Albuera, Cuidad Rodrigo, Nivelle, Nive, Orthes. and Toulouse. At Waterloo, his swinging Ills regiment as the French Old Guard m,ade their charge, in such a way as to ovei-lap the head of the column and break their formation, was the critical moment of the battle -the beginning of the downfall of Napoleon. The British sergeant in charge of the battle- field points out the e.xact spot. Colburne was afterward^ appointed governor .sfeneral of Canada, where Port Colburne on Lake Huron is named in his honor. He was entitled Ix)rd Beaton with the rank of Baron. He was given the Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath in ISIiS, was made general in 18.'}4, and co?mnander of the military forces in Ireland in IS.'SS. He died in ISG.'S. (Dictionary of Biography). There were three immigrant Colburns to this country, William of Bos- ton, Robert of Dracut, and our Nathaniel of Dedham. No relationship between them has ever been established. They may have come from the northeast coast of England, for on one of the Danish invasions of England, the Danes who remained there on a branch of the Humber River, at a place called Cattaraick, gave the name Colburn to a locality in the "Hun- dred of Hang", and it has kept it ever since, a postoffice being there now of that name. The number of Colburns all over the United States must be very large, but this record is contined to the descendants of Isaac Colburn, Jr., of West Dedham, after showing his descent from the immigrant Nathaniel. The Colburns like their neighbors, from the time of the Winthrop immigration to the prestsnt generation, were people of gi-eat practical efficiency. The men "cleai'ed land, cut wood, made rails and posts, built stono walls; built barns and sheds, made simple furniture and farm utensils, involving carpentry, blacksmit.hing, and painting; cared for bees, poultry, sheep, cattle, horses; could break colts and steers; could milk. ?hear sheep, and butcher; could plougli, plant cultivate, and harvest vegetables; could sow, mow, reap, thresh and winnow gi'ain; could rea.d the sky, tell bii'ds. wild animals, insects an.d common plants and trees at sight; could plant, prune, and graft trees; make vinegar, and maple syrup and candy; cure ham and bacon; fish, trap and hunt successfully; make ^hoes, harnesses, and simple tools; weavte baskets, make kites, bow guns, darts, whistles, &c., for the children; i-epair anything; make a telling speech at town meeting," serve well in war, and in town offices. The women "understood all phases of housework, sweeping, dusting, washing ironing; could cook, make y»oast, spap, candles, butter, cheese, sausages, preserves of all sorts; candy, al(\ beer, wines, ai^l cordials; could spin yarn from wool, an,(l thread from flax; dye and knit, weave and embi-oider; shrink ;ind bleach cloth; cut and maki" oidinary garments darn and niond anything vwdl; l)raid rugs, papei- a jcKini, cut hair; gather medical herbs, nurs*' (he sick, rear large families; manage a flower garden. DESCENDANTS OF ISAAC COLBURN, Jit. aad liave potted plants bloom all winter indoors; milk, make hay, and have all the children clean and neatly dressed at church on time, Sunday morning." The boys "brought in wood, collected eggs, brought in water from spring or well, fed regularly, every day, chickens, pi.gs, cattle and horses; drove the cows to pasture in the morning and home again at night; suckled the calves, rubbed down the colt<, weeded gardens, cut wood, spread hay, picked berries, husked corn, did endless chores of all sorts." The girls helped in many of these, also "tended babies, Avashed dishes, dusted, m;>,de beds, swept, knitti^d, .mended, washed, inade soap, butter, preserves, and cooked." "From helpin.g mother from love ^or her, in tasks of no moment, to jhelping father for love of the family, in ta-ks of consequence., the boy was promoted to tasks of such importance that the lives of helpless creatures depended upon his fidelity to duty. A similar promotion awaited the girl from the ,day she began to care for her doll clothes to the day she began to prepare her own bridal outfit." The old self-supporting home was at once a school of training for practical life and a discipline for character. Out of it came the sturdy New England spirit, which "was daunted by no ob-tacle, got full informa- tion, and then went the limit" in achieving those conquests of nature, and of European tyranny and diplomacy which have made America what it is, "founded on home, school and church". All honor to our sturdy and worthy ancestors. He used to pop corn and sell it through the village, and is said to have introduced into Dedham rice pop corn. He was one of those who protested against placing the church on Nahatan Hill, and changed to the Baptist church in Medfield. He notified the parish that he would not pay nis church tax, and when ar- rested for noivpayment, lay stiff on the ground, and so compelled the of- ficer to get assistance to carry him to the wagon, and stayed in jail one night as a protest before he paid it. One morning before daybreak, he hoard a commotion among his cattle, ai:d found a mad dog biting them — he seized a stake from his cart, and killed the dog before the stake broke into three piece.s — the dog was found to have come from Bollingham. Seven or more cows were bitten, and all sorts of suggested remedies were tried, even burj'- ing some up to their necks, but none were saved. It is related that a travelling c.vhibitor of a trained moose ortce showed his animal's proficiency in jumping over a pole &c. to the (.'olburn children and when asked by the father how much he should pay. replied, "Nrjlhing. It has been more fun for my moose to see your children tiian for your children to see my moose." (This story is often claimed for other large families). When his grandchilden became too numerous to entertain in his house (still standing) at Thanksgiving, he originated the '"Sciuantum Party" in August. He used to pay all toils over Neponset Bridge, and provide rolls, &c. for the dinner. His carriage led in the return home,, and then the others followed, in order of age. This grew to be a party of 125 to 150. Amo'-y Fisher catered a great cauldron of clan chowder, an,d the other eatables were brought in family baskets. Swimming, boating and singing filled the social da,y, with a spice of Sam Curry's jokes, with Fred Bacon a close second. The party was reluctantly abandoned when the Boston sewer was put through Sciuantum, and in 1SS2 the lasi party of that generation was held on Uncle Isaacus' farm in West Dediiam. but the sea shore flavor was lacking, and it was not repeated. But in 1917 the .Tones cousins held a most enjoyable reunion in Voung's Hoti'l, Boston, George M. Diniond presiding, and Mary A. Smith, secretary. Charles M. Co.\ presided at the Jones Family reunion there in 1920, and it »vas voted to invite in the other branches of the Colburn Family, and make it an annual affair. According- ly in 1921 the Smith line and Uichards line were represented, and more would have been if the weather had ncu been so severe. Edward J. Cox presided, and awarded as prize to Carrie Wheeler and Herbert A. Jones and wife as coming the longest distance, from Montezuma, Iowa, a photograph of Dana P. Colburn in a group of the Horace Mann Teachers' Institute T ecturers, al.so to Herbert K. Jones of Holliston Mass., for com- ing and bringing the largest number of his descendants.
